CONCERT DETAILS

Grammy-nominated pianist Joyce Yang puts her “agility, balance and velocity” (The Washington Post) on full display with Tchaikovsky’s highly original First Piano Concerto; Tchaikovsky’s colleague Hans von Bülow claimed that “this true gem shall earn you the gratitude of all pianists.” MSO Assistant Conductor Ryan Tani conducts this program.

What to Expect:

  • An electric performance by pianist Joyce Yang; explore videos of her performing (and teaching!)
  • Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, which has appeared in films such as The Music Lovers
  • Sibelius's Sixth Symphony, which he thought of as “an expression of a spiritual creed, a phase in one’s inner life”
  • Composer Anna Clyne’s Color Field, inspired in part by Mark Rothko’s Orange, Red, Yellow, which she calls “a powerful example of the artist’s Color Field paintings, featuring red and yellow framing a massive swash of vibrant orange that seems to vibrate off the canvas”

The MSO Steinway piano was made possible through a generous gift from Michael & Jeanne Schmitz
